New Delhi, India (AHN) - India will generate 800,000 tons of e-waste, from electronics, by 2012. It generated 146,800 tons of e-waste during 2005.
A survey carried out by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said that the top ten cities that generated e-waste are Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Surat and Nagpur.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has notified the Hazardous Wastes (Management, Handling and Trans-boundary Movement) Rules, 2008 for proper management and handling of hazardous wastes that include e-waste.
The rules make it mandatory for all units handling e-waste to register with CPCB.
The hazardous wastes are also required to be sent or sold to a registered or authorized recycler or re-processor or re-user.
The Guidelines for Environmentally Sound Management of e-waste published by CPCB provide a detailed approach and methodology for environmentally sound management of e-waste.
"The procedures for setting up & management of e-waste facility shall include licenses from all appropriate governing authorities such as environmental clearance, recycler registration from Central Pollution Control Board under HW Rules, obtaining of consents under water act, Air act and authorization from the state pollution control board," the guidelines say.
E-waste is a term that is used to refer to waste generated from used electronic devices and house hold appliances like computers and television sets and so on. It contains over 1000 different substances many of which are toxic and potentially hazardous to the environment and human health if they are not handled in an environmentally sound manner.
